Benefits of Noise-Canceling Headphones
This era has been earmarked by unprecedented technological advancements. In every sector of society and in every industry there are new gadgets and gizmos as well as innovative software and hardwareNo matter where you look or wherever you go, in every field of business and industry one finds new creations in software, hardware, mobile devices, electronic or computerized gadgets, and more. However it is safe to say that one of the areas most impacted by innovations in technology is the areas of communications. Mobile phones, smart phones, iPhones, and BlackBerry devices are but a few examples of the expansive role of voice communication today, Similarly, some of the most popular technologies helping people interact today include instant messaging, live video chats, web conferencing, and more.
(Developers of communications software are always looking for new ways to improve issues having to do with sound transmission and sound quality|Communications software specialists are constantly striving to better the products they design and pay special attention to improvements in sound transmissions and quality}. Yet despite their efforts, problems with audio quality continue to exist and may show up in everyday user experiences. Too much background noise or sound feedback can interfere with listening to music, video, phone calls, and more. Similarly, many of the problems which are currently being addressed have to do with delays in voice transmission and with reverberation or what is known as echo.
How do problems with echo manifest? Here are some of the ways in which sound may be distorted or interfered with when shared digitally across the miles:
1) Speakers hear their own voice or words repeated back to them by the system
2) Speakers, listeners, or conference attendees hear a screeching or howling sound
3) Sound quality mimics that of an echo chamber
4) Speech distortion
5) Background noise
The good news is that with the introduction of noise cancellation software or what is known as echo cancellation technology, many of these issues have been solved. In brief, by installing advanced processors in devices such as microphones, which filter out external noise, audio quality is significantly enhanced. While all echo reduction technologies operate under the same premise, depending on the system there are various degrees of sophistication of this feature.
In a nutshell, here is how it works:
Using a mixture of noise canceling hardware and software, a replica or copy of the incoming noise is made. Then electronic circuitry generates a sound wave that is equal but opposite to the original. This copied sound signal is an exact representation of the noise in terms of amplitude and frequency and effectively cancels out the incoming noise. Stated more technically, the copied sound waves make the original sound waves go out of phase. And while all this occurs under the surface and unbeknownst to the user, the end result is that your devices produce audible, clean sound.
What constitutes good or excellent sound quality? The first feature is crystal clear sound which sits comfortably in your ear. The sound should be balanced, meaning the lows are not too low, you can hear detail in the middle range, and the highs are not harsh or screechy
A fact little known to most people is that one of the most common applications of this technology today is in the everyday use of noise canceling headphones, which are also one of the hottest ticket items currently sold in the industry. They are most effective in preventing noise infiltration when traveling on a bus or subway or in other noisy or crowded environments. Most airlines now supply noise canceling headphones to their first-class or business passengers which help to block out engine and cabin noise. When you go to purchase your next set of headphones or ear buds, choose at minimum a quieting level of 17 decibels (dB), which will be indicated on the package. Finally, keep in mind that a rechargeable battery is required to power up these modern-day devices; however most headphones will play for hours on end before they need to be recharged.
