South Holston River

The South Holston has been fishing fantastic and for those that don't know it, November is the best month of the year on this river. The tail end of the sulpher hatch is happening right now, but they are few and far between. That said, the Blue Wing Olive (my favorite mayfly) has taken over and the fish have keyed into them. TVA hasn't been releasing much water on the weekends so wade fishing is excellent. It's not uncommon to have 30+ fish days right now. These fish love a size [...]

Great Nymphing on the Watauga

The watauga has been consistently fishing better each day. With the much needed 4 days of rain, we anticipate it to improve even more. We're sticking to the sub-surface nymphing for the most part. We are seeing a few BWO's though and will jump to a dry fly / emerger if it is warranted. We're making sure to be right on the bottom and we're focusing on secondary seams and fast water. The rainbows are piled up in those slots because of the low water we've had all season. Th [...]

Smallmouth on Lower Holston

Well folks the productive days of catching smallies will be coming to a close pretty soon. As many of you know winter smallie fishing can be done, but it's tough and not the best use of your time. With the 4 days of much needed rain this past week we're anticipating about two to three more weeks of targeting this great fish and we'll probably call it good for the remainder of the season. We're still catching a few on top water but we have moved back to the the sub-surface ba [...]

On the South Holston, the conditions couldn't be any better. There are afternoon hatches of BWO's and Sulphers. The sulphers are waning but the BWO's are coming on strong. Fish a size 20 Comparadun BWO or a Thorax with the under hackle trimmed very slim. These fish are picky, but they're worth it. In high water, bring out the big sticks and the 4 inch streamers for a shot at some big brown trout. It's just before the spawn so they are aggressive.

<img src="i [...]

The smallmouth fishing has been eractic lately, but we have them dialed in. With the recent cold front, stay sub-surface with a white/white clouser or a white/gray clouser. Fish an intermediate line and a medium size fly. Focus on the shoals and any minor change in water depth. There is plenty of grass and you'll usually find them stacked up on the edges waiting to ambush the baitfish. By 3pm, switch to a popper and focus on the cut banks. With the afternoon warmth, the bigger fish will [...]

Watauga Low but Fishing

Fall fishing in the watauga has officially started and it's kicking off quite well. A decent amount of BWO's are showing up in the late afternoon, making for a good way to end the float. However, your best bet for success will be to stay in the nymph rigs. The water is very low and the obvious spots are getting hit hard. As a result, you need to focus on the less common spots. The fish are stacked in pretty thick though. Don't forget to rip a big streamer in the deeper holes. Th [...]

Lower Holston

The Lower Holston is fishing quite well despite the recent warming. We do expect it to slow down tuesday and wednesday as a large frontal system drops in but by Friday it will have stabilized and will be back to good fishing conditions. The smallies are willing to move a good distance for a meal right now and the top water action has been pretty hot. Focus on medium body dark colored poppers and don't be afraid to use crawfish patterns subsurface also. There a good number of carp around and [...]

Watauga River

We spent the past weekend on the Watauga in low water but it is fishing pretty darn well. We were focusing on the nymph rigs and running a san juan worm up too with a pheasant tail or a copper john below it. We had a few good fish (18 inch +) and as many 14inchers as we wanted to catch. We're focusing on the seams and faster water because the fish are stacked in those locations with the water as low as it is right now. It's not uncommon to catch 5-10 fish in each location right now.
The fall brown spawn is comin and the big boys are looking to fatten up a bit. There's great wading opportunities early in the day but TVA has been good to us and kept the afternoon flows going. We're focusing on streamers right now in high water and hitting the good streamer water hard. Were not putting huge numbers in the boat, but were putting plenty of quality fish in there for our clients. If you can throw a 6-7wt with a 200 grain sink tip 40ft, you need to give us a call and book y [...]

Lower Holston Success

The Lower Holston is fishing very well in the early AM up until about 2pm. By then the sun is at peak and the bite slows considerably. Get out there by 7 or 8am and focus on the cut banks and weed beds. There's lots of grass right now because of the months of sun and little rain. The fish are densely packed in feeding lanes but will regularly take a medium bodied dark popper fished with a slow chug. It's a long float so just fish the high spots after 2pm and take a lunch break a little l [...]

Watauga River

The watauga continues to fish solid even in low water conditions. When TVA isn't running water it's very low, still floatable, but low. If you approach the fish with caution and cast about 10-15ft farther than you're used to, the fishing can still be excellent. We're mostly nymphing right now and that's always a good way to pick up fish. There are plenty of ants right on the banks and the fish will take them regularly in a size 18. On the nymph rigs, go with a san juan worm u [...]
